Big Changes to 2012 General Deer Hunts in Utah

If you’re planning to hunt deer in Utah in 2012 you need to be aware of some major changes to the season structures as well as the hunt areas. The changes are a result of poor hunter success brought on by poor weather and low deer numbers observed by hunters during the 2010 season. The unit-based hunting idea was actually approved in December of 2010, but at that point could not possibly be implemented for the 2011 hunting season.

Here is a quick recap of the changes:

Hunters used to seeing general season hunts split into 5 regions will now see 30 different deer “units” and will only be allowed to hunt a single unit.
The limitation of hunting in a single unit applies to rifle, muzzleloader and archery hunters; however archery hunters may still participate in the extended archery season hunts if they pass the extended archery season ethics course.
The application period for general season hunts will run from February 1 to March 1, 2012.
There is a possibility that permit numbers will be reduced in 2012 (as they were in 2011). Permit quotas for 2012 will be issued in May.

Season dates for 2012 general season hunts are as follows:

Archery August 18 - September 14
Muzzleloader September 26 – October 4
Rifle October 20 – October 28

Quality Private Land Hunts Available in Colorado

MEEKER, Colo. - Colorado Parks and Wildlife, in cooperation with two local landowners, is offering big-game hunters an opportunity to apply for a limited number of high-quality elk and mule deer hunts on private ranch land in the Meeker area. A total of 27 hunts will be available to hunters who have already drawn limited deer and elk licenses for Game Management Unit 23 for the coming big-game seasons. Hunters who are interested in applying for these hunts must do so in writing by October 3. "This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for hunters," said District Wildlife Manager Bailey Franklin. "We encourage everyone to take advantage of this chance to enjoy this rare, high-quality private land hunting experience."

Wildfire Maps

For those of you headed into the back country for hunting and/or scouting trips, take a look at the US Forest Service webpage showing large incident wildfires to see if your chosen area has been affected. The map can be found here. Click on each circled number and another window will detail location, acres burned, % contained and the cause of the fire.

There are a few fires burning in Montana and Wyoming that are rather popular hunting areas, so take a look to make sure you can get into the areas you have in mind for your next trip!

Elmhurst, Illinois RMEF Banquet August 27

If you love good times and the outdoors like we do, you won't want to
miss the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Illinois Chapter's 22nd annual
banquet and fundraiser. We guarantee you a great time supporting a
great cause!

This year's banquet is on Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at Diplomat West
Banquets in Elmhurst. Doors open at 4:30 PM. During the "social hour"
you'll enjoy drawings, raffles, games, drinks, and the silent auction.
Dinner and live auction will follow. Proceeds from this event will go
to support RMEF's vital conservation efforts.

Remington, Browning, Weatherby and Henry. Handguns from Smith & Wesson

have several gorgeous outdoor paintings, custom made Elk Foundation

2011 Elk Hunt Forecast

MISSOULA, Mont.—Winterkill, habitat problems and wolves have driven elk numbers down in some areas. But many of America’s roughly 800,000 elk hunters have reason to be optimistic about upcoming seasons, based on hunt forecasts compiled by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

2011 Montana Wolf Hunt

Montana's wolf-hunting licenses will go on sale August 8, 2011. Licenses—$19 for residents and $350 for nonresidents—will be valid within 14 specifically defined wolf management units. Hunters must obtain permission to hunt on private lands.

Colorado Road Closures

SPRINGS, Colo. - Bow hunters planning to hunt in parts of Eagle, Routt and Grand Counties during the opening day of archery season, Saturday, Aug. 27, should plan for road closures and delays both the day before and the first day of the season due to the USA Pro Bicycling Challenge scheduled the same day. Race officials expect at least 30,000 spectators, many of them on bicycles, to line Hwy 40 opening day, Saturday Aug. 27, with at least 10,000 of these spectators expected to line the road along Rabbit Ears Pass. Colorado Parks and Wildlife advises hunters to be aware of the following dates and times: According to race officials, on Friday, Aug. 26, Stage 4 of the race will start in Avon and travel west along Hwy 6 before turning north onto Hwy 131 at approximately 12:30 p.m..
